Structural Characterization

HCG is a heterodimeric glycoprotein composed of two non-covalently associated subunits: a 92-amino acid α-subunit (common to the glycoprotein hormone family) and a 145-amino acid β-subunit. The α-subunit contains five disulfide bonds and two N-linked glycosylation sites (Asn⁵² and Asn⁷⁸). The β-subunit contains six disulfide bonds, two N-linked glycosylation sites (Asn¹³ and Asn³⁰), and four O-linked glycosylation sites in the C-terminal extension (Ser¹²¹, Ser¹²⁷, Ser¹³², Ser¹³⁸).
